Public Space Mural and Sculpture Applications
Sustainable Textile Product Rag Dolls and Educational Toy Designs with Social Responsibility Awareness
The project includes efforts to raise awareness on waste management and recycling on our university campus through art. For this purpose, seminars on sustainability, waste management and recycling were held. The staff and students of Sculpture department held a recycling sculpture workshop by using waste metals and other solid wastes found in the campus waste collection area. It is aimed to draw attention to all the audience-participant stakeholders about the waste materials in their environment and the power of art in transforming them.
In the event called “Open Air Art Studies in the Public Space”, organized under the title of “Art and Design Student Meeting within the scope of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of the Foundation of Dokuz Eylül University”, supported by the Culture Industries Support Program for the Future Youths of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, students came up with innovative models in the field of cultural industries and developed their skills. Mural works were carried out in designated places at Campus with the cooperation of Kharkiv State and Design Academy and Dokuz Eylül University.
Within the scope of this project financed by our university's own resources; our staff from many art disciplines have discovered new expression possibilities by working together. Murals were applied to the educational buildings in the campus area and sculptures and aesthetic seating areas were produced at the meeting points.
It is of great importance to raise awareness as well as the importance and effort given by designers and artists to sustainability. With this awareness, handmade rag dolls reflecting upcycling/recycling details by using “OCS” certified (Textile Processed According to the Organic Content Standard) fabrics, which are divided into production and surplus category by Akar Tekstil (external stakeholder) company and educational toys were produced. The toys produced were shared with the children hospitalized in the oncology unit of our university children's hospital.
